Declaration of Agriculture Disaster – Extreme loss of honey production

ASBs in the north are declaring Agriculture Disaster due to poor Canola crop in the Peace region.

MD of Smokie River’s letter to the Honourable RJ Sigurdson states:

“…losses between 60% to 90% of average annual production…”

“Agronomic and environmental factors played a role…”

Regions of the Peace experienced a significantly shorter flowering period and heat blast this summer due to the high temperatures in July followed by heavy rainfall. Canola makes up about half of the crops in the MD of Smoky River and is a significant source of nectar for honey producers in the region.

This is in addition to the slower starts due to high winter die off with the continued challenges with availability of the varroa mite control products and continued restrictions on hive imports from the US.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has again opened up a public engagement as part of the risk assessment for bee hive imports from the US. Governments, industry, public and other organizations are able to participate in the risk assessment through the CFIA website: Share your thoughts: Risk mitigation options for the importation of honey bee packages from the United States
