Regulating Agricultural Plastics in Alberta: Your Feedback Matters

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation are engaging you on the potential inclusion of agricultural plastics in a provincial regulatory system for collecting and recycling designated agricultural plastics waste.

Since 2019, Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation has been funding the Alberta Ag-Plastic. Recycle It! pilot program for grain bags and twine. Since then, Alberta established an Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation and other recyclable products continue to be managed through regulated stewardship programs. Other plastic products are being managed through a regulatory approach.

The Province is undertaking targeted engagement in August and September 2025 to inform our options and recommendation on if and how a regulatory framework could be applied to manage agricultural plastic waste. They recognize that ASBs could be affected should agricultural plastics waste be regulated, and appreciate your insight and feedback on the potential and approach, including but not limited to:

  • types of agricultural plastics to include;
  • implementation timing;
  • material recovery rate targets; and
  • service standards for material collection.

No decisions are made, and we appreciate your feedback.

Survey – The “Managing Agricultural Plastics Waste through a Regulatory Approach” engagement details and survey can be found online at https://www.alberta.ca/agricultural-plastics-management-engagement. We ask that all feedback be provided through the online survey, which is open until September 12, 2025.

Information Session – Held online on August 13 from 10:30am to 12:00pm, where we shared an overview of regulatory recycling approaches and the agricultural plastics recycling in Alberta as well as considerations for transitioning to a regulated system.
