In 2024 the ASBPC participated in the CFIA lead Seed Modernization task team by sending one of the committee members who reported back and lead discussions about the issues. A copy of the CFIA report is posted below.
Fall of 2024 the Committee past a motion to create an ASB Position Statement on farm saved seed as this was loudly expressed concern by farmers that engaged in the in person engagements held just prior to COVID. Additionally some jurisdictions in Canada have moved to only offering crop insurance for crops seeded with certified seeds. The Committee felt that the ASBs are in a position to provide a voice to the concerns of Alberta farmers on this issue.
Currently the Committee contracted an expert to pull together a briefing, timeline and draft position statement and is now open to engagement and feedback from individual ASB members and Alberta farmers. The draft position statement and supporting documents has been circulated to ASBs through the AAAF and ASBPC regional reps, and is available below. A link and QR code to a feedback form are also available to be added to local communications to encourage engagement.
