Resolution Response Review Update

April 17, 2024 the ASBPC met to review resolution responses to date.

Only two responses to the 10 2024 resolutions have been received to date:

RESOLUTION 4-24: SUPPORTING A COMPENSATION MULTIPLIER

This resolution was sent to Agriculture and Irrigation and Environment and Protected Areas and was forwarded to Forestry and Parks for response.

The response indicates that they have added an addition of a multiplier for bred cows (1.75) and bulls (1.5) to reflect their value as breeding stock and the potential loss of unborn calf. However the discussion from the floor at the 2024 Provincial ASB Conference was that the ask should be for all livestock. While Resolution 4-24 doesn’t specify beef animals specifically it does refer to the ABP’s recommendation. Therefore the ASBPC has recommended a grade of Accept in Principle.

RESOLUTION 7-24: RE-REGISTRATION OF 2% LIQUID STRYCHNINE FOR CERTIFIED APPLICATORS

This resolution was sent to the executive director of PMRA.

The response indicates that re-registration cannot be done to a pest control product that has been cancelled. What would be required to put strychnine back on the market would be “new information that could demonstrate that the product has acceptable risk and value, this would have to be provided as part of a new registration application.”.

PMRA is available to provide information and guidance regarding the registration process, and information on currently registered products. Future Strychnine resolutions need to be directed to agencies that can provide the new information and support a new registration application. For this reason the ASBPC recommends a grade of Accept the Response.

Looking ahead the ASBPC passed a motion to have the Executive Assistant pull together the history and backgrounds from the past Strychnine resolutions, and create a briefing that can be used by those wanting to submit another Strychnine resolution. A position statement can then be drafted for ASBs as a communication tool in the event that an opportunity is found to proceed with a registration application. It was further discussed having a presentation about strychnine at the regional conferences.
