New Alberta Blue Book App

Now available for Apple and Android

The Alberta Blue Book has gone digital and now gives farmers a faster and more convenient way to access trusted crop protection information wherever the job takes them.

The new Alberta Blue Book App is now available for Apple and Android devices. It delivers nearly 50 years of trusted crop protection information to the palm of your hand. This digital resource is the next step in the evolution of the Alberta Crop Protection Guide, which has supported farmers and agronomists since 1977. While the familiar printed Blue Book will continue to be produced and distributed, the new app offers another way to access the identical science-based information, whether you’re in the office, the field or the sprayer.

With more than 700 registered crop protection products included, users can quickly search by crop, pest, product name or active ingredient to find the information they need in seconds. A farmer can also compare products side by side to easily evaluate options and make informed crop protection decisions.

One of the app’s biggest advantages is that it works even when cell service doesn’t. Its offline functionality allows farmers to access critical information while at work in remote areas where connectivity can be limited.

The app will also receive updates throughout the year. This will ensure users always have access to the latest product information as it becomes available. Crop protection decision making has become increasingly complex, and calculations often need to be made quickly. Reliable and readily available information can help farmers make confident decisions when timing matters most.

The Blue Book App was developed collaboratively by Alberta Canola, Alberta Grains and Alberta Pulse Growers. It is a practical tool designed by farmers, for farmers.

While the technology is new, the goal remains the same: to provide Alberta farmers with trusted, science-based information to support and improve decision making on the farm.

The printed Blue Book will remain available. Many farmers value having a hard copy in the truck, shop or office. The new app simply complements the printed guide by providing another convenient way to access the same trusted information wherever work takes them.

The Bluebook has been a long standing tool to encourage the safe and effective use of pesticides for crop production. The guide was originally created by provincial staff, and was transitioned to Alberta Grains in 2020. The Alberta Association of Agricultural Fieldmen managed the grant for the development of the first app. This new app, with commitment and strategy by Alberta Grains for ongoing maintenance is an important tool and will continue to be promoted to farmers across the province.
